Bio

Future West is a band of rock and roll veterans that bring their history with them like the traveling minstrels from ages past. Lived-in experience influences the band and their collective histories write themselves in the songs. From the goth punk and hardcore styles of Southern California, to the turn it up attitude of Portland OR's underground rock scene, the raw roots of Memphis TN, and the post punk of England. Here is a band that brings with them the wisdom of ages that conveys true rock and roll spirit in more or less three chords.

Here’s a brief history of the musicians that make up Future West. Joe Mac, the singer/guitar slinger did first US tour in 1991. (Suckerpunch- Little Redhead Records, Ebullition Records, Allied Records) Throughout the ‘90’s he toured extensively up and down the west coast as well as full US tours as Punky Rockit (Campground Records) and Sharks Kill (Atomic Fireball Records) Touring in vans, sleeping on floors, and sticking to the DIY ethos. After moving to Memphis TN, he played in Vegas Thunder(Sympathy for the Record Industry). They toured the US and Europe. Back in Oregon in 2000, Dark Skies (Empty Records) released two full length LPs and toured the US multiple times. 2009 he migrated back to CA, started Bad Assets (Waay Underground! Records), who toured the west coast, released two EPs, and toured through the southwest for SXSW. After a brief stint in Austin TX he landed in Asheville NC, where Future West was born.

Scott Hubener, Future West’s drummer, played drums in early 90’s Florida band Girls can Fight, who toured throughout Florida and released a 7" and cassette. Once in Asheville, he played in House of Building.

Bowman Kelley the bass player has moved around the US since arriving from England in 1989. He lived in Chapel Hill, NC during the years that Merge Records was founded and played drums in Village Idiot with Tone Mayer of Flat Duo Jets. After relocating to the West Coast in 1994, he played bass with skate punk stalwarts Nash and SF metal band Helivator (Lungcast Records) with members of Cutthroats 9, Unsane and Men’s Recovery Project. Moving to the other coast, Bowman played garage rock in the Bad Popes along with members of Man with Gun Lives Here and Reverend Vince Anderson and the Love Choir in Brooklyn, NY. After starting a family in Memphis, relocated to Asheville and joined forces with Future West.

Influenced by the likes of the Gun Club, The Minutemen, The Clash, Joy Division, Bad Brains, Velvet Underground, Nick Cave, The Fall, The Wipers, Dead Moon, MC5, Siouxie and the Banshees, X, Born Against, Thin Lizzy, Can, and countless others, this is a band that while staying true to the spirit of rock and roll, is too vast to be pigeonholed into any one genre.

Their debut album is being recorded at HiZ, LowZ Studio and should be released by Jan 1, 2014.
